A 32-year-old Waterbury man died Thursday morning after his tractor-trailer lost control and collided with another truck on a Massachusetts highway, according to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office.

Antonio Marcucci was traveling northbound on South Main Road in Otis when his tractor-trailer veered off the road and struck a southbound truck at approximately 9:09 a.m., according to authorities. The Otis Police Department responded to the two-vehicle collision at 1322 South Main Road.

An arriving officer found both tractor-trailers lodged in a snowbank, one in each lane of the roadway, according to the district attorney’s office. Marcucci was pinned inside the cab of his truck and required assistance from the officer.

Emergency responders transported Marcucci to Baystate Medical Center, where he died from his injuries sustained in the crash, authorities said.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer, which bore Oklahoma license plates, did not sustain serious injuries in the collision, according to the district attorney’s office.

Preliminary investigation using dash camera footage from one of the trailers showed that Marcucci’s northbound tractor-trailer lost control before veering across the roadway and ultimately colliding with the southbound truck, authorities said.

The crash occurred on South Main Road, a route that connects several Berkshire County communities in western Massachusetts. Otis, where the collision took place, sits near the Connecticut border in the southern part of the county.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident, according to the district attorney’s office. Authorities have not released additional details about what may have caused Marcucci’s truck to lose control or whether weather conditions played a role in the crash.

The fatal collision marks another tragic incident involving commercial vehicles on Massachusetts roadways. Tractor-trailer accidents often result in serious injuries or fatalities due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved.

Marcucci’s death represents a loss for the Waterbury community, where he resided. The city of approximately 108,000 people in New Haven County has seen residents involved in various traffic incidents on interstate highways and local roads connecting Connecticut to neighboring states.

The investigation into Thursday’s crash remains ongoing as authorities work to determine all factors that contributed to the collision. The use of dash camera footage in the preliminary investigation demonstrates how modern technology assists law enforcement in reconstructing serious traffic accidents.

Both tractor-trailers involved in the crash sustained significant damage, as evidenced by both vehicles ending up lodged in the snowbank along South Main Road. The impact was severe enough to pin Marcucci inside his truck’s cab, requiring immediate assistance from responding officers.

The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office continues to coordinate with the Otis Police Department as the investigation proceeds. Additional details about the circumstances surrounding the loss of control and subsequent collision may emerge as authorities complete their examination of the crash scene and review all available evidence.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by commercial truck drivers who travel long distances on highways throughout New England and beyond, often navigating challenging road conditions and heavy traffic.
